Goten and Gokuu Goten
didn't meet Gokuu until he was seven years old, and even then they thought
it would only be for a day. Goten seemed a little uncertain of what to
expect, and at first, hid behind Chichi... ...then ran out to get a hug
from his daddy (anime only). Gokuu hadn't even known he had a second son
until the Tenkai-ichi Budokai, but he did his best to get to know his son
in the little time he had.
Goten developed a fair amount
of respect for his father, like he had for Chichi and Gohan. Gohan would
have told him a lot of stories about Gokuu (Goten said to Trunks that Gohan
had told him Gokuu was the strongest in the world), and to finally meet
him after all of that must have come as a shock. Also to be looking at
a grown up image of himself, that would have been scary. In the
manga it took Goten a while to get used to Gokuu, and he didn't show any
kind of affection for his father until Gokuu had to return to heaven (and
that was just too cute for words).
The anime and manga are pretty
different when it comes to Gokuu and Goten. Gokuu and Goten seem to be
a lot closer in the
anime because they didn't have to cram so much action into so many pages
per chapter. Particularly at the end of DBZ, when Gokuu goes off with Uub,
in the anime Gokuu stops to say goodbye to Goten, Trunks and Pan, while
in the manga, he leaves without saying anything to them. I guess Goten
would have felt that his father was leaving his life again just as suddenly
as he'd entered it.
